Dear Maniacs, I hope you enjoy getting to know Maniac reader member Shannan Harper.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Kankakee, Illinois.
Where do you live?
Hazel Crest, Illinois, about 30 minutes from Chicago.
What do you do?
Bachelor’s prepared registered nurse.
Who inspired your love for reading and how were you inspired?
As a child and teenager, we were only allowed to go to school and church, so I grew up without friends to play with. Plus there weren’t any other girls on our block, so I was always in the house reading.
As I went through college, I discovered that I had suffered from depression due to some things I experienced as a child. As I got older, reading sometimes kept the blues away and is essentially what kept me wanting to enjoy life.
By the time this gets published, I’ll be in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Christian Book Lover’s Retreat to meet one of the first Christian fiction authors I read, Jacquelin Thomas.
What is it about reading that you most enjoy?
I enjoy getting lost in the story. I’m starting to travel a little more, so I enjoy reading about other places in hopes I can get there and see them one day.
What are your top three favorite fiction genres?
African American Christian Fiction
African American Romance
African American Women’s Fiction
What are you reading now?
Nicki Night’s Desire in a Kiss and a couple of Kimani Romances in paperback. I’m re-reading The Family Business 1 and 2 on Kindle, The Killers of Flower Moon on audiobook for our book club’s November book, and Our Kind of People in hardback.
Where do you most love to read?
I found this chair with ottoman that was actually a lawn set, but I have it set up in my room between my bookshelf and another several piles of books on an old file cabinet.
The Fun Five
Formal Wear, or Jeans and Sneakers?
Yoga pants and sneakers, but I will dress up if the occasion presents itself.
Early Bird or Night Owl?
Plan It or Wing It?
Plan it. I make lists for everything, even the grocery store, lol.
Comedies or Dramas?
What’s your favorite season?
Fall. Not too hot nor too cold.
Shannan Harper’s Bonus Round
People always ask me how many books I have. Unfortunately, I have four full bins, two overflowing bookshelves, and several piles of books, plus a lot on my Kindle, so I don’t have an answer for that.
Things I collect other than books:
• Refrigerator magnets
• Keychains (I’ve got eight of them for one key, lol.)
• Shoes, including boots
• Candles and wax warmers (My linen closet if full of them.)
