Dear Maniacs, I hope you enjoy getting to know Maniac reader member Roshida Downey.
Where are you from?
Born in New York, New York.
Where do you live?
What do you do?
Well, I’m sort of retired, but I went back to work full time.
I work for a nonprofit called ProUnitas Inc. Originally, my husband, Keith, and I were volunteering. As it grew, I began working part time and, since March 2016, full time. We are in the Kashmere/Trinity Gardens Feeder Pattern, elementary through high school. We connect these children who are so desperately in need of services before they can actually learn in class. So many are from broken homes, one-parent families, no parents but living with a grandparent. Many are homeless. Quite a lot have mental issues. It’s difficult to teach a child when all these social ills are upon them day in and day out. These children are dealing with day-to-day issues that an adult deals with.
We connect the children with all the resources at the school. There are so many resources but they have no way of knowing what they are or how to get to them. We have partnered with ProUnitas so that its services are in the schools and the children use the services while at the school. The students are monitored so as not to miss appointments or miss school. It’s been a revelation to see what little is available in the schools in Houston as compared to New York.
Who inspired your love for reading and how were you inspired?
Great question! I have always had a love of reading, learning words. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t reading. It inspires me to read books by authors who invoke a feeling of home. When an author makes me feel a part of the writing then I am hooked, forever!
What is it about reading that you most enjoy?
I love becoming engrossed in a story, when I feel like I know the characters it makes me not want to put the book down. I had that feeling with L.A. Banks and her VHLS (Vampire Huntress Legend Series) books. I knew those people! See what I mean? I still refer to the characters as people and often wonder what they would be doing today.
History didn’t really interest me until I began reading Beverly Jenkins’s books. I love her stories and the information!
What are your top three favorite fiction genres?
What are you reading now?
Zombie Rush Trilogy by Joseph Hansen
Where do you most love to read?
The Fun Five
Quiet Night at Home or Night on the Town?
Night on the Town
Wine & Cheese or Beer & Pretzels?
Wine and Cheese
Camping in the Woods or Sunning & Swimming at the Beach?
I don’t like dirt or bugs, so camping is not for me! I am not a beach fan, either. Don’t like wet sand sticking to me and coming home with me. It lingers for a while, and if you bring food with you, it always winds up in your food! Sounds like I’m picky, huh? LOL!
I’ve never been to a spa, but I think I would love it. No TV, maybe just radio and serene music. Listening to the lake, birds and being left alone to my own thoughts, of course with books, in old time book format, too! I miss a real book to hold in your hand! Get up when I feel like it, walk, eat good food – trying to lose weight – and exercise.
Comedies or Dramas?
What’s your favorite season?
When I was in New York it was Fall, since moving to Texas there are only two seasons, hot and hotter!
