This week, we’re getting to know Maniac reader member Edwina Putney. Make yourself comfortable and prepare to be entertained.
Where are you from?
Houston, Texas – Born in Third Ward. Grew up in Sunnyside.
Where do you live now?
Still in Houston.
What do you do?
I’m a retired elementary school librarian. Retired since 2010.
Who inspired your love for reading and how were you inspired?
My mom started my love of reading when she gave me a copy of Grimms Fairy Tales and a copy of 1001 Arabian Nights as Christmas gifts when I was in 4th grade. I had always enjoyed reading, but those books had me hooked.
My love of reading was extended by my favorite teacher, Mrs. Edwyna O. Wheadon, who taught English Lit. She taught us how to truly appreciate and analyze all types of literature (including Shakespeare’s plays), and I have retained that appreciation for all genres ever since. Her teaching also helped me in college English, where I consistently made As or Bs from white professors who were prepared to see black students fail.
What is it about reading that you most enjoy?
I enjoy relating to characters, visualizing the settings, and getting lost in the stories. If the setting is in another country, I love researching the place and looking at various pictures. Even if I never physically travel to those places, in my mind, I have because of the visual images created by gifted authors. And when it comes to my favorite genre, AA romance, I love to fall in love with the amazing black men who are created by my favorite AA romance authors. At 69, I know I’ll never find a black man like those I read about, but I have plenty of imagination and some hella erotic dreams because of them.
What are your top three favorite fiction genres?
Romance, historical fiction, and science fiction
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading The Twin, book 3 in The Black Land series by D. Camille Ma’at. This series, along with the forerunners, The Black Diamonds Series and The Uncut Series are amazing books, which I highly recommend.
Where do you most love to read?
(1) Sitting in the chair in my bedroom and
(2) Under the dryer at the beauty shop (which is sometimes interrupted by the amazingly stimulating beauty shop conversations that take place).
The Fun Five
Quiet Night at Home or Night on the Town?
At home. I am a real homebody and mostly a loner. But can I turn up? Without a doubt.
Wine & Cheese or Beer & Pretzels?
Wine & cheese or wine & unsalted pretzels. I don’t like beer.
Camping in the Woods or Sunning & Swimming at the Beach?
As a child, I loved swimming, so my preference would have been sunning and swimming at the beach. But because of my Girl Scout years (through high school graduation), I also went camping each year. So now, I would prefer camping in the woods, as long as it’s in a cabin with indoor plumbing, and not in a tent. I paid my dues at Girl Scout camps where we had outhouses and a wash house. Additionally, my maternal grandmother did not get indoor plumbing until I was in junior high. So I know about pumping well water for everything, including our baths in those big tin tubs.
Comedies or Dramas?
Both, although I watch more dramas.
What’s your favorite season?
Winter (which I only truly experience when I visit my son in Newark).
